Illegal felling of Pine Trees

On 28/11/2020 in evening a Team of staffs of Thoubal Range, after receiving information from social media for illegal felling Pine Trees at Chanam Santrok area, went for patrolling near Chanam Santrok Mamang Ching under compartment no. 8, Yairipok Block of Waithou Protected Forest. The team saw some felled Pine trees lying on the hill side and on further inquiry, the number of Pine trees fallen were found to be 12. The team could not pick up the Pine logs as it was getting dark and team did not have machineries to lift them up. On the next day, i.e on the 29/11/2020, in the morning at around 8.00 am, the same team along with 5 (Five) labourers went to the spot to pick up the logs with machineries. As they were seizing the logs by cross cutting and loping the branchs to facilitate transportation, at around 12.20 pm some miscreants came to the site and threatened to stop the work and open fired two rounds Gun shots and threatened the unarmed forest staffs to leave the site immediately or face dire consequences up to the extent of causing theirs lives. Consequent upon the above and experiencing the situation of helplessness, the forest staffs fled from the area and approached the Office-in-charge of the Irilbung Police Station who has jurisdiction over the area. The Forest team then lodged an FIR at the Irilbung police Station against miscrreants. Later in the day, at around 3.00pm, a combined team of Forest staffs and Irilbung Police personnel came back to the site and took stock of the situation to lift the logs illegally fallen. However, some people resisted and told the Forest officials that they would not allow lifting the logs adding that they are their property. One person who was later identified to be Mr. Chanam Nabachandra Singh, father of Mr. Chanam Ibomcha Singh who open fired Gun shots earlier, as claimed to have right over the land and informed that Forest officials should not dare to lift up the logs.
